Culture, Identity and Belonging
Navigating cross-cultural experiences and finding a sense of connection.
Belonging can be layered
Migration, family loyalty, language, racism, intergenerational expectations, and professional identity can all shape emotional wellbeing. For many people, distress is not separate from culture; it is woven through questions of belonging, obligation, grief, and self-expression.
Culturally responsive therapy makes room for these layers without reducing the person to a cultural label or asking them to explain everything from the beginning.
Therapy can hold complexity
Therapy may explore how cultural values and family systems have supported survival, while also noticing where old roles have become restrictive. This can be especially relevant for migrants, bicultural adults and youth, and people navigating family expectations across languages and generations.
